Coming on the back of whitewashing West Indies in both ODIs and T20Is, India would be keen to extend their winning streak in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka as well.

After a rejig in the original squad, the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to be played on February 24 in Lucknow. Having last hosted a T20I in 2019, Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium will be hosting one after more than two years.

As far as hosts India are concerned, their lone T20I at this venue had been played more than three years ago in 2018. While the same remains their only international match here, Sri Lanka will be playing at this stadium for the first time on Thursday.

In the general run of things, tickets for the Lucknow T20I should’ve been put on sale by now. In cases when just three days are remaining for the match and no other international match is scheduled to be played in between, tickets are available for general public to buy and plan their travel accordingly.

Having said that, there has been no official communication from UPCA (Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association) regarding the tickets of the first T20I for now. It is worth mentioning that, much like the recently concluded Ahmedabad ODIs and Kolkata T20Is (barring the third one) against West Indies, India vs Sri Lanka Lucknow T20I could also be played behind closed doors.

While there is no confirmation with respect to the same, fourth phase of the ongoing Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Elections on February 23 could also have an impact on the allowance of spectators for the first T20I.

Meanwhile, interested fans are suggested to keep a check on Book My Show for tickets might be available over there provided spectators are allowed for this match. UPCA, whose last international match was the first India vs New Zealand Test last year, had sold tickets via Book My Show then.

India T20, Test Squad, Players List for Sri Lanka Series 2022: The Indian selection committee headed by Chetan Sharma announced the India squads for the T20I and Test series against Sri Lanka on Saturday evening. Rohit Sharma, who was appointed as India’s white-ball captain a couple of months back, has been named as the full-time captain in the red-ball format as well.

The 34-year-old’s appointment comes after Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from the position following India’s Test series loss to South Africa in January. Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed as T20 & Test vice-captain. However, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been dropped from the Test squad.

“We thought long and hard before arriving at decision. We have spoken to them before and told them that they won’t be part of two tests against Sri Lanka. Doors are totally open to them. It’s just for these two tests,” selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma told reporters during a virtual press conference. “They have served the country for long, so they can always come back, why not? It’s like a graph. .. Rahane hit a hundred yesterday. this is a process of managing…Who wouldn’t be happy if they come back,” he added.

As of now, we have told them they won’t be considered for two tests. In between, we shall see how the replacements go. We are nobody to close doors on anyone. This is cricket. Performance matters. Now they will be playing Ranji trophy selectors will be watching. We spoke to them long before itself,” Sharma further added.

On Rohit being appointed the captain, the Chairman of the selection committee said, “He is the No 1 player of our team and plays all the formats. Time and again we will be speaking to him.”

On Saha failing to make the cut, Sharma said, “I can’t tell you on what grounds he has been dropped. That’s for selectors. All I can tell you is that he was told before and asked to play the Ranji trophy, which is the ladder for the Indian team.”

“Why he did not play Ranji, the state association CAB cab tell you that. That is not my jurisdiction. As selectors, we wanted them to play. We are not looking at age. When there are youngsters sitting outside, we thought we shall give chance. For these two test matches. But it’s important to play Ranji. Else, how will we know if you are match-ready?

Sharma also spoke on Hardik Pandya’s selection and said, “When we get to hear that Hardik Pandya is 100 percent fit, we shall definitely consider him immediately.”

When asked by a reporter why he is avoiding playing the Ranji Trophy, Sharma said, “If you have his number speak to him. You are not part of the selection committee, so you can’t decide. Support him. Don’t raise issues. The kid has done so much for the country.”

In response, the visitors lost Kyle Mayers early as Deepak Chahar found the outside edge. He then dismissed Shai Hope (8) in the next over before walking off the field due to an injury. Despite losing two quick wickets, Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran began by dealing in boundaries. But India fought back quickly; as Harshal Patel and Venkatesh Iyer picked up two wickets each in quick succession. But Pooran kept his side alive by hitting another 50. Romario Shepherd joined the onslaught to give Pooran good company, who eventually fell for 61 by Thakur. Harshal and Thakur bagged another as WI ended on 167/9 in 20 overs.

Earlier, India had set West Indies a target of 185. In the first innings, India lost Ruturaj Gaikwad early as Jason Holder struck. However, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer hit a flurry of boundaries to tilt the momentum back. The duo then brought up their impressive 50-run stand in the 8th over. Iyer was dismissed in the next over on 25 by Hayden Walsh. Then, Roston Chase cleaned up Kishan on 34. Rohit Sharma didn't last long as Drakes castled him. Thereafter, Venkatesh Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav began dealing in boundaries. Eventually, Surykumar (65 off 31 balls) and Iyer (35*) smashed 86 runs in 30 balls to take IND to 184/5 in 20 overs.
