The Asia Cup 2022 will commence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday. With the T20 World Cup only a few months away, the tournament will serve as dress rehearsal for Asia’s top cricketing nations.

History of the Asia Cup - winners and hosts

Billed as one of the biggest tournaments in international cricket, the history of the Asia Cup traces back to 1984 when India, under skipper Sunil Gavaskar, won the inaugural edition held in the UAE. The series was played in a round-robin format with Pakistan and Sri Lanka taking part as well.

The tournament has since had 14 editions - the last of them being in 2018 in UAE. India beat Bangladesh by three wickets in the final held in UAE, successfully defending its title.

Most successful team: India is the most successful side in the tournament’s history with seven titles (1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018). Sri Lanka is second on the list with five titles, followed by Pakistan which has won the title twice. Sri Lanka is also the only team to feature in all 14 editions.

Hosts: Bangladesh has hosted the Asia Cup most number of times (five). UAE will play host for the fourth time with the 2022 edition. Meanwhile, India has only hosted the tournament once in 1990-91 when it clinched its third title after beating Sri Lanka in the final in Kolkata.

Asia Cup 2022: Return of the T20 format

The Asia Cup 2022 will be played in the T20 format. This is the second time the tournament will be played in the shortest format. It was last held in the T20 format in Bangladesh in 2016, where India beat the host by eight wickets in the final.

Why was the Asia Cup shifted to UAE from Sri Lanka?

The Asia Cup was moved out of Sri Lanka in late July, owing to the political and economic crisis in the island nation. The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board had admitted to logistical difficulties in hosting multiple nations.

Gill’s 130 came off just 97 balls that gave India the momemtum to reach a big score. This was after India lost Ishan Kishan (50) and Deepak Hooda (1) in quick succession. Zimbabwe bowler Brad Evans would also be mighty pleased with his bowling efforts as he picked up his maiden five-wicket haul that helped his team to keep the visitors below 300 on a good batting wicket.

Earlier, the Indian openers, Shikhar Dhawan (40) and Rahul (30) had looked solid before Evans went right through India captain’s defence, giving the hosts their first breakthrough. He then removed Dhawan with a good length delivery. This was after the openers had already brought up a fifty-run stand.. Nyauchi, Ngarava, both the opening bowlers for Zimbabwe kept things tight before Evans got into the act.

IND Vs ZIM 3rd ODI: Predicted Playing XI, Timing, and Pitch Report

India Cricket team will be looking to clean sweep against Zimbabwe in the third One Day International (ODI) on the tour of Zimbabwe. India dominated in the first two matches in Harare Sports Club, Harare. Key players for India's performance are Shubman Gill, Shikhar Dhawan, Sanju Samson, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel and Muhammad Siraj.

The second ODI was a bit of a surprise for India as KL Rahul opened with Shikhar Dhawan and India lost a few wickets in quick succession, compared with the first ODI. However, Sanju Samson's 43 off 39 deliveries helped India chase down the total within 26 overs. After sealing the series, India will try their best to defeat Zimbabwe in the final ODI of the series.

India's batting line-up should remain undisturbed as Shikhar Dhawan is having a decent form, whereas captain KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan have to prove their mettle against Zimbabwe. As KL Rahul will likely be opening with Shikhar, Rahul Tripathi and Rituraj Gaikwad may stay on the bench. Though India can take chances in bowling by including Shahbaz Nadeem or Avesh Khan.
