Indian left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been released from the team and the left-arm spinner Axar Patel has joined the Test squad ahead of the second Test match of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, which will be played from March 12 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, Axar has gained full match fitness and he has already joined the squad in Mohali, where India won the game in a dominating style and the match got finished on Day 3.
Even though Kuldeep was not picked as a backup of Axar in the squad the Indian management feels that there is no need for three left-arm spinners in the Test team.
While announcing the India squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka on February 22, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had stated:
Along with Kuldeep, second batting coach Apurva Desai, trainer Anand Date and physio Partho have also been released. However, Sairaj Bahutule has been retained and he will continue to stay with the team for the second and last Test.
India’s Test squad for 2nd match vs Sri Lanka:
Rohit Sharma (captain), Priyank Panchal, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), KS Bharat, Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, R. Ashwin (subject to fitness clearance), Axar Patel, Saurabh Kumar, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Mohd. Shami, Jasprit Bumrah (vice-captain).
