TATA IPL 2022, Match 41: DC Vs KKR – Match Report

The Delhi Capitals (DC) were back to winning ways in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after registering a victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 4 wickets on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers as he continued his impressive run with the ball and starred with a four-wicket haul, leading DC to a crucial victory. Chasing 147, DC lost Prithvi Shaw’s wicket on the first ball of the innings after Umesh Yadav took a wonderful catch off his own bowling.

Harshit Rana claimed his maiden IPL wicket to dismiss Mitchell Marsh. David Warner was on the move with five fours and was joined by Lalit Yadav as DC were 47/2 at the end of the powerplay. The duo stitched a fifty partnership for the third wicket. Yadav sliced a six followed by a four as DC were 80-2 after 9 overs. Umesh Yadav got KKR back in the game with the wicket of Warner, who was caught in the deep for 42.

KKR scalped two wickets in no time to dismiss Lalit Yadav and DC skipper Rishabh Pant. While Lalit Yadav was trapped LBW by Narine, Pant was caught behind off Yadav’s bowling. Axar Patel hit 2 fours and a six before the left-handed batter was run-out for 24 as DC required 34 off the final five overs. 14 runs were conceded in the 17th over after Rovman Powell whacked a four and six, bringing DC closer to the target. With only 4 runs required off the final two overs, Powell wrapped the chase with a maximum.

Earlier, KKR, who were put in to bat first, made three changes – Aaron Finch, Harshith Rana and Baba Indrajith were named in the eleven. Chetan Sakariya provided early success for DC in the second over. Aaron Finch was dropped before the opener was bowled on the very next delivery.Venkatesh Iyer was caught at short fine-leg off Axar Patel’s bowling and KKR were 29-2 at the end of the powerplay.KKR lost the wickets of Baba Indrajith and Sunil Narine on consecutive deliveries as Kuldeep Yadav struck twice in the 9th over.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer was joined by Nitish Rana as KKR were 56-4 at the half-way mark. Iyer eased off the pressure by hitting two fours in the 12th over. Rana smacked the first six of the innings in the next over. However, Kuldeep Yadav didn’t let the momentum slip away and scalped the wickets of Iyer and Andre Russell in the same over to pick a four-wicket haul. Nitish Rana continued the flow of runs from one end as the left-handed batter added three fours and as many sixes as KKR were 128-6 at the end of 18 overs.

Rana reached his fifty with a six. Rinku Singh at the other end, creamed three fours as the duo stitched a vital fifty partnership. Mustafizur Rahman scalped three wickets in the final over to restrict KKR to 146-9 in the first innings.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 150/6 (David Warner 42, Rovman Powell 33*; Umesh Yadav 3-24) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 146/9 (Nitish Rana 57, Shreyas Iyer 42; Kuldeep Yadav 4-14) by 4 wickets.

If you are a batter heading into the Gujarat Titans-Sunrisers Hyderabad clash, there are plenty of reasons to be nervous. A win here will move them to 14 points from eight matches while Hyderabad will have ten from the same number of matches. A win here is crucial for both teams and could well go a long way in ensuring a top two finish.

What to expect: Titans have played just one match at the venue while Hyderabad are yet to play at the Wankhede. The dew will again have a say in the choices the captain makes. However, in the last five matches, the team batting first has been able to defend a score at the venue.

Rashid will be key for Titans to win the middle-overs battle as it'll be crucial to not only pick wickets but also stop the runs.

Shikhar Dhawan, Player of the Match: The process, I always talk about it, I focus on it. About my fitness, my approach - I keep working on those skills. Results will take care of itself. The wicket was stopping a bit, I tried to go for the big shots, but I couldn't connect. But I kept my calm. Once I get set, I can get those boundaries, that's what I bank on. Captains Speak

PBKS captain Mayank Agarwal: We would like to win a few tosses, we have just won one. I thought Arsh bowled exceedingly well, he has bowled the tough overs, he has been great for us. Even Rabada bowled well, to get Ruturaj and get Rayudu at that stage. These two have been great for us. As a team we have to be think about being smart. You want your opposition as much as they can on the longer side. As a batter even if you mishit the balls, you'll get the result against the shorter boundary. Those moments get the better out of you. It is important to carry the momentum. We have won one, but we need to win two or three on the bounce.

CSK captain Jadeja: I think we started very well, with the new ball we bowled in good areas, but I thought we gave away 10-15 runs in the last 2-3 overs and we didn't execute our plan very well. I think [Rayudu] was batting brilliantly, but as I said we could have restricted them under 170-175. [On the chase] I think not getting a good start in the first six, we're not putting runs on the board in the first six. So we need to improve on that and come back strong.

Kagiso Rabada: In the powerplay we were behind the rate. Must tell you, Shikhar and Mayank, the way they held their never and then Shikhar and Bhanuka the way they set it up was unbelievable. Livingstone the way he played some gentle strokes out of the park, that set us up nicely and we got a winning total. Each and every individual in our bowling line up put our hand up. Arsh (Arshdeep) has been the best death bowler in the comp, that's what the stats say. He has got a lot of talent, drive and ambition. And he is just a good bloke. So nice to have him around. I know I am going to bowl at the death. Arsh has been magnificent. He has been leading the way in that discipline. Everyone else knows their roles. Rahul is a key spinner for us. Sandeep has experience and got us a key wicket in the powerplay. Rishi put his hand up in the final over. I don't think I have left out anyone (smiles). I think we bowled really well. Still a bit nerve wracking when you are bowling at MS Dhoni and there is not one red shirt in the crowd, only yellow shirts chanting his name. He held his nerve, credit to him.

Punjab edges out Chennai by a slender margin and a lot of credit must be showered on young Arshdeep Singh who continues to be a revelation in the death overs.

CSK 176/6 in 20 overs: SIX! Magnificent MS! Short and tailing in and Dhoni swivels nonchalantly to smack the ball into the stands. Slower bouncer and Dhoni lets it go. WIDE signalled by umpire Erasmus and CSK needs 20 off 5 balls.

Superb yorker and Dhoni fails to put it way. CSK needs 20 off 4. Up in the air and Dhoni gets a toe-edge down to deep mid-wicket. The ball was sliding down leg and Dhoni opted to swipe at it but mistimed it straight to Bairstow who made no mistake. No fairytale finish from the miracle worker tonight. Pretorius, the new man gets a single. SIX. Jadeja slams the full-toss straight back over the bowler for a maximum. A single to finish and Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings by 11 runs.

IPL 2022: Where can KL Rahul improve as batter? Should Ishan Kishan sit out? Burning questions from LSG vs MI clash

Lucknow Super Giants trumped Mumbai Indians for the second time in the season with skipper KL Rahul making another ton, his second against Mumbai this year. The eighth successive loss of the season sees Mumbai all but out of contention for a place in the playoffs this year.

Here we raise a few burning questions to dissect the match and the tactics used by the teams.

Why are Lucknow persisting with Manish Pandey in the XI?

Manish Pandey has totalled 88 runs in six innings this IPL while striking at a rate of 110. Batting at No 3, Manish comes in behind KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock and often has a set platform for him to build upon, something he has failed to do time and again. He has struggled against spinners and his dot ball percentage since 2020 is 37% overall. Given that Rahul is also an anchor in the top three, Manish is surplus to Lucknow's requirements, especially as they have Deepak Hooda and Ayush Badoni capable of filling up that slot.

Manish was dismissed by Kieron Pollard off a short ball last night after he struggled his way to 22 off 22 balls. Manish's stint delayed Marcus Stoinis's entry, who had a good chance of doing better against a pace-heavy bowling line-up. With Lucknow preferring to bat deep, they can replace Manish with Krishnappa Gowtham and aim to bring in Badoni, Stoinis or Hooda at No 3 based on game situations.

Have Mumbai Indians under-bowled Kieron Pollard?

Kieron Pollard's batting form has been questionable, but the West Indian all-rounder managed to take two wickets last night with some clever bowling in the middle overs. A tricky medium pacer on slow wickets, Mumbai haven't quite used Pollard enough in the last couple of seasons despite him doing reasonably well. In 2021, across 13 overs with the ball, Pollard took five wickets at an economy rate of 7.22. This year he has bowled nine overs at an economy rate of 8.6, a touch high, but still better than that of Basil Thampi, Tymal Mills, Daniel Sams and Jaydev Unadkat.

Pollard bowled 21 overs in 2020, going at over nine runs per over as Mumbai Indians won the title, but his bowling wasn't quite needed then. This season, especially with MI failing to identify their best spin bowler for the middle overs, it's useful to have Pollard chip in with his cutters every game.

Where can KL Rahul improve as a batter in T20s?

KL Rahul's batting template is pretty evident. He likes to settle down at the crease before going big and it's something that has worked out well for him in the past. In this game, he was on 29 off 30 balls and in his next 32 balls, Rahul went on to smash 74 unbeaten runs. Combining his two knocks against Mumbai Indians this year (103* and 103*), and splitting Rahul's returns across phases, we see his powerplay strike rate rests at 117.9. In the middle overs, he has been dominating, striking at a rate of 191 in these two matches. In the death, though, even with his range, Rahul sort of slows down a touch compared to some of the elite top-order batters who bat deep into the innings.

The strike rate is at 196 in these two matches, which is good, but it is still short of being elite. A top finisher or the likes of Jos Buttler or Faf du Plessis go at a rate well over 200 in the death if they are batting through. Given the time he takes to settle in at the start of the innings, Rahul should be aiming to finish stronger, something he's truly capable of. Him batting deeper into the innings would only be more valuable than a finisher walking in and teeing off if he can take that strike rate up even further.

IPL 2022 CSK vs RCB highlights: Uthappa, Dube carnage leads Chennai to 23-run win over Bangalore

CSK vs RCB IPL 2022 Match 22 Highlights: Robin Uthappa and Shivam Dube's whirlwind third wicket partnership propelled Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) to a score of 216/4, which turned out to be just too much for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batters. RCB lost Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli and Anuj Rawat within the powerplay. Glenn Maxwell looked like he was connecting his shots but he too had to walk after being dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. Earlier, former CSK opener Faf du Plessis, who is leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) this season, won the toss and said that his team would like to bowl first at the DY Patil Stadium. The out of form Ruturaj Gaikwad seemed to have got off to a good start but fell on 17 to former CSK pacer Josh Hazlewood. Moeen Ali then fell thanks to a sensational fielding effort from RCB debutant Suyash Prabhudessai. RCB looked on top at the time but Uthappa and Dube took off after that.

IPL 2022, SRH vs GT Highlights: Hyderabad dent Gujarat’s unblemished record, win by 8 wickets

Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in their IPL game here on Monday. The Sunrisers chased down the target of 163 with five balls to spare with captain Kane Williamson top-scoring with a 57 while Nicholas Pooran remained not out on 34. Young Abhishek Sharma made 42 at the top of the order before retiring hurt. For the Titans, Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan took a wicket each. Earlier, captain Pandya top-scored for the Titans with a 42-ball 50 not out while Abhinav Manohar chipped in with 35. For SRH, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan took two wickets apiece while Marco Jansen and Umran Malik got one each.
