Series reaches fever pitch with a decider in Ahmedabad

While the pitch in Ranchi left Hardik Pandya "surprised", the India captain was "shocked" by what was on offer in Lucknow. And when the talk is largely about the playing surface ahead of a series decider, especially with India's proud record of 12 undefeated home series on the line, something's got to give.

Ahmedabad, the venue for the third and final T20I between India and New Zealand, has had its fair share of debate around pitches in the past. And the last thing both teams would want is another tricky T20 surface that sees Lockie Ferguson bowl as many overs as Mark Chapman; or Deepak Hooda twice as many as Yuzvendra Chahal.

Pitch aside, India will know that there's work to be done, especially with a young side that's trying to ready itself for 2024. After a breezy ODI whitewash, the T20I rubber hasn't been as easy for the hosts. While the death bowling cost them in Ranchi, their batting was under the scanner two days later; India got past a target of 100 with only a ball to spare. But the challenging conditions stole the thunder away, hardly allowing the team to assess their progress. For example, Arshdeep Singh bowled the 20th over again after copping some heat in the first T20I, but that he was up against a team limping at 94/8 hardly lent credibility to his five-run last over.

India prevail in spin-dominant contest to level series

It's not a sight you get to see very often when two high quality sides meet in a T20I game. India and New Zealand played out a very different kind of a contest in Lucknow on Sunday (January 29) where no sixes were hit the entire evening. The ball touched the boundary ropes only 14 times in the game and both the teams combined to send down an incredible 30 overs of spin. Eventually, it was the hosts who prevailed in a tight contest chasing down a target of 100 with a ball to spare.

The false start

New Zealand were never in control with the bat despite Finn Allen flicking Hardik Pandya for a boundary in the very first over. Washington Sundar's introduction at the other end gave a clear indication of what to expect on the surface and that prompted Hardik to introduce Yuzvendra Chahal in just the fourth over. That ploy worked as Allen attempted a reverse sweep, only to miss the ball as it crashed into the stumps after hitting his leg. Devon Conway endured a similar fate as he too attempted a reverse sweep, this time off Washington, only to get a glove as Ishan Kishan completed an easy catch. Those two wickets put them on the backfoot as New Zealand made only 33 in the powerplay.

Spinners strangle New Zealand

What followed was a barrage of spin. Hardik had seen enough in the powerplay and brought on Deepak Hooda and Kuldeep Yadav into the attack to make full use of the conditions. They didn't disappoint as Glenn Phillips found his stumps rearranged after another reverse sweep didn't yield the desired result. Kuldeep then got one to turn a mile to clean up Daryl Mitchell as India took full control.

Suryakumar Yadav - in a league of his own in T20Is

Suryakumar Yadav has lit up the T20I format like no other batter before him. While Suryakumar's three hundreds and 13 fifties - in just 43 innings - is impressive, what's more incredible is that he has an average of 46.4 while striking at 180.3.

That strike rate is too high to be accompanied by the consistency which that average represents. T20 batters are either attacking or consistent. They are very rarely both at the same time; even if they are, they aren't for as long as Suryakumar has managed to be.

Let's put those numbers in perspective. Andre Russell scored 627 runs at a strike rate of 168.1 in 43 innings from 2014 to 2021. This was the highest strike rate achieved by a batter before Suryakumar over a period as long as his, in terms of innings. But Russell averaged only 21.6.

Suryakumar has benefited from playing a lot of T20Is within two years of his debut, though, that too while being in prime form. Most other batters have had T20I appearances spread over longer periods. So the vagaries of time are likely to have affected the form of batters such as Russell.

A fairer comparison would be with Jos Buttler. In his last 43 innings, Buttler has averaged 45.1 striking at 151.5. That is the highest strike rate for any batter other than Suryakumar who averages 45+ across 43 innings in T20Is. Suryakumar's strike rate is nearly 19% better than Buttler's in this time frame. That's how rare it is to pair an average of 45+ with a strike rate of 180+ over an extended period.

Rohit wary about rushing Bumrah back, hopeful fast bowler will play last two Australia Tests

Rohit Sharma has warned India against rushing Jasprit Bumrah back into action and hopes the fast bowler will recover sufficiently from injury to be available for the last two Tests against Australia in March.

Bumrah was on his way back to the ODI side for the home series against Sri Lanka earlier this month, having recovered from the back injury he suffered prior to the 2022 T20 World Cup, when he sustained a new glute injury and was withdrawn from the squad. India's team management is being particularly cautious about Bumrah's fitness in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup in India in October-November later this year.

"About Bumrah, I'm not too sure at the moment, of course for the first two Test matches he's not going to be available," Rohit said after India swept New Zealand 3-0 in the ODI series. "I'm expecting that; not expecting but hoping he plays the next two Test matches but again we don't want to take any risk with him. The back injuries are always critical. We have got lot of cricket coming up after that as well, we will see, and we will monitor. We are in constant touch with doctors and physios at NCA and we are constantly hearing from them."

Bumrah has been on the sidelines since September last year because of a stress reaction in his back and was rehabilitating at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He had been advised rehab for a minimum of six weeks and was making gradual progress; he resumed training on November 25 and bowling on December 16 at the NCA. But the emergence of a new injury set him back further, putting him in doubt for Border-Gavaskar series as well.

Onus on New Zealand's top five to deliver in dead rubber

Six-eighty-six runs in the series opener and just 219 in the second game. Even if the total runs scored in the match reduced by nearly 70% from the first ODI to the second, the common and worrying theme for New Zealand was how their top five barely showed up. While chasing 350 in Hyderabad, their top five totalled 101 runs; batting first in Raipur they managed a mere 11 runs as New Zealand collapsed to 15 for 5.

Michael Bracewell's heroic 140 off 78 balls saved them the blushes the first time but there was nothing to hide their face behind in the second. Undoubtedly, New Zealand need a lift from their top five, which is without Kane Williamson, and what will lift their spirits is that Indore, the venue of the final game, serves runs - like its food - on a platter. In the last ODI here, in September 2017, Australia scored 293, with their top three scoring 229, including a century from Aaron Finch. And in the most recent T20I here last October, Rilee Rossouw blasted a match-winning 48-ball century when South Africa amassed 227. On both occasions, India found it hard to dismiss the opposition's top five.

Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell are the batters New Zealand will expect a lot from, and No. 5 Tom Latham is perhaps due for runs against a side he already averages (minimum five innings) and scores the most against. Finn Allen got a start in the first ODI but he was beaten comprehensively by Mohammed Shami's swing in the second, and will be itching to get runs too.

New Zealand's issues don't end there. The chances of it happening in Indore may not be much and they are already without Tim Southee and Trent Boult, but they will be desperate for quick and early wickets to avoid more punishment from Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma.

Clinical India demolish NZ to secure series win

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill shared a 72-run alliance for the opening wicket as India cruised to an eight-wicket win in the second ODI against New Zealand in Raipur to clinch the three-match ODI rubber 2-0. The hosts chased down the paltry target of 109 in just the 21st over.

On a track that seemed to have eased a bit during the second innings, Rohit and Gill employed the pull, hook and drive to put India in cruise control. Rohit also seemed to be in a mood to try out a few innovative shots as he cracked the reverse sweep off Mitchell Santner. Eventually, in the 15th over, the visitors picked up their first wicket of the innings when Rohit attempted an across the line shot off Henry Shipley but was trapped in front. The ball kept quite low which didn't help Rohit's cause.

Gill brought India closer to the target with a slog-sweep and pull. However, against the run of play, India lost another wicket when Virat Kohli was dismissed for the second time in the series by Santner. The left-arm spinner lured Kohli out of the crease and Tom Latham did the rest behind the stumps by whipping the bails off. Gill soon hit the winning runs with a boundary of Santner.

The foundation stone for India's win was laid by the bowlers. Mohammed Shami set the tone by removing Finn Allen in the very first over. Allen, who prefers to stay back, slogged one across the line and was cleaned up by Shami. Mohammed Siraj then employed his trademark three-quarter seam to nip it away from the left-handed Henry Nicholls and forced him to edge one behind. Shami followed it up by dismissing Daryl Mitchell; the No.4 batter getting a leading edge back to the bowler.

The procession of wickets continued as Hardik Pandya pouched a brilliant one-handed return catch to send Conway back to the hut. Latham didn't survive for long either as he tamely edged Shardul Thakur to Shubman Gill as New Zealand slipped to a precariously placed 15 for 5. At that juncture, with the tourists in dire straits, Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips tried to prop up the innings. However, Bracewell couldn't repeat his heroics from the first ODI as he top-edged a pull to the wicket-keeper.

Amanjot, Deepti star as India begin tri-series with a dominating win

It was a day when the young and seasoned combined to kickstart India's final run to the Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa on a positive note. Debutant Amanjot Kaur and the experienced Deepti Sharma rescued India from a precarious situation to help them to what turned out to be a match-winning score. Despite being 69 for 5 in the 12th over, the pair's efforts helped India amass 44 in the last four overs to get to 147.

Then the Indian spinners used the dry, slow surface in hot and humid conditions to their advantage to stifle South Africa and seal a 27-run win.

This was after India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was forced to miss the contest because of illness. The tourists' XI also didn't feature the returning Shikha Pandey, Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar, the reason for which couldn't be ascertained.

South Africa seize early control

After being inserted in on a slowish surface, India openers Smriti Mandhana, standing in for the unwell Harmanpreet, and Yastika Bhatia regularly used their feet in order to force the pace. Mandhana managed to hit Ayabonga Khaka through square leg after charging down but fell a ball later after looking to hit over mid-off.

Using her bowlers in a one-over spell in the first four overs, Sune Luus ensured that South Africa kept the pressure on India. At the end of the powerplay, India were 29 for 1. Harleen Deol then welcomed left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba with a slice through backward point and short third after dancing down the wicket. But she was run-out next ball after a slight hesitation on the second run. Jemimah Rodrigues was then adjudged caught behind down leg, after missing a pull shot off Mlaba.

Bracewell's 140 gives India mighty scare after Gill smashes 208

As they waited for the final DRS review of the match - a mere formality - Shubman Gill and Michael Bracewell shook hands and congratulated each other. They had batted superbly to set up a modern classic. Gill became the youngest double-centurion in ODIs before Bracewell made a game out of a chase of 350 from 130 for 6 with a sensational 140 off 78 balls. Eventually New Zealand were within two sixes - Bracewell had hit 10 already - of levelling scores when they lost their last wicket with four balls to go.

Gill's place in India's ODI side was questioned because the batter who replaced him when he was resting scored a double-hundred, and he responded one of his own after making 70, 21 and 116 in his first three innings since his return. This wasn't the easiest of tracks for batting: the next-best score was Rohit Sharma's 34, and India's 349 for 8 was the lowest score in any ODI innings to feature a double-century.

The conditions turned in the second half of the match as they do, but by then Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav had helped India take six wickets, which proved to be the difference even when Bracewell and Mitchell Santner added 162 for the seventh wicket in just 17 overs. Towards the end the asking rate was within reach but Bracewell ran out of partners.

When play started, with India once again taking on the challenge of scoring a total they can defend under lights, hard lengths bowled straight were difficult to hit, and the odd ball turned for Santner and Bracewell. New Zealand kept picking up wickets regularly, but Gill kept taking the heat off, scoring 19 off 8, 17 off 12, 12 off 8 and 18 off 10 immediately after the first four dismissals. New Zealand conceded just 93 runs in 13 overs from the 35th to the 47th, but then Gill launched his biggest assault, scoring 39 off his last 12 balls.

Rohit and Gill got India off to a quick start, but once Santner started to string together tight overs, wickets began to fall. Rohit felt the need to take the bowling on, and skied an intended hit down the ground. Soon, the first ball that turned in the match went past Virat Kohli's bat to hit the top of off. Santner had brought New Zealand back into the match.

Gill, though, looked sublime. His back-foot punch, his extra-cover drive and his dismissive pulls were all on display. In a welcome departure from the way India play in such situations, Gill tried to take spin down immediately. His first attempt resulted in an outside edge off a non-turning Bracewell offbreak, but Tom Latham dropped the catch. Gill didn't back down. In the same over, he slog-swept a six to get to 52 off 52.

Santner to lead New Zealand in T20Is against India

Mitchell Santner will lead New Zealand in the three-match T20I series against India which follows the three ODIs. The 15-member squad also includes uncapped left-arm swing bowler Ben Lister, who has received his maiden New Zealand call-up, along with all-rounder Henry Shipley who recently made his ODI debut against Pakistan, with both standing a chance of a T20I debut.

Shipley was the leading wicket-taker in the previous season of Super Smash while Lister, since his debut for Auckland towards the end of 2017, has been the team's leading wicket-taker in white-ball cricket. Lister made his New Zealand A debut in India last year but his tour was cut short when he was hospitalised in Bengaluru with pneumonia.

Speaking about Lister's selection, chief selector Gavin Larsen said: "Ben has made an exciting impact for Auckland early in his career in red and white ball cricket. Since his debut in late 2017, he is the Aces' leading wicket taker in T20 and List A cricket. His ability to swing the ball considerably as a left-armer is particularly exciting."

"We all felt for Ben after his tour ended the way it did last year, and it's a testament to his work ethic that he's been able to return to domestic cricket so strongly this season," he said.

Larsen also said that Santner, who has captained New Zealand in 10 T20Is, will be "invaluable" with his knowledge of the Indian conditions and prior leadership experience. "Mitch is a leader in our white ball teams and has captained the T20 side in India before. His experience in Indian conditions will be invaluable leading this group."

A more comprehensive drubbing is difficult to imagine. Centuries from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill powered India to 390 on a slow and seemingly lifeless track before the ball started hooping around under lights. Mohammed Siraj took four wickets of Test quality, and Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav supported him with two each as India bowled Sri Lanka out for 73. India's victory margin was comfortably the biggest in ODI history, beating New Zealand's previous record of 290 runs against Ireland.

The change in conditions was dramatic all right, but the difference in quality of the two sides was no less stark. India chose to bat first to challenge themselves to set an above-par total and then defend it in dewy conditions. As it turned out, the match hardly lasted long enough for dew to become a factor, with Sri Lanka bowled out in 22 overs.

The win, though, was set up with the bat. Rohit Sharma and Gill gave India the quick start they needed before Kohli took over. Gill fell for 116 off 97 in the 34th over; Kohli scored an unbeaten 166 off 110 balls. These were two contrasting centuries. If the two innings had a pulse, Gill's resembled that of a cricketer: explosive power interspersed with near-inactivity. Kohli's was that of a mid-distance runner: regular, rhythmic mid-to-high heartbeat maintained efficiently without any huffing and puffing. In the home stretch, he turned into a sprinter.

It should not be a surprise. It was only the second ODI century for Gill, who is still coming to terms with pacing international innings, whereas Kohli's was his 46th. It was his 10th against Sri Lanka, the most any batter has scored against a single opposition.

KL Rahul: 'Batting at No. 5 has helped me understand my game better

Batting at No. 5 in ODIs has helped KL Rahul understand his game better. After his match-winning and unbeaten 64 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata which helped India seal the series, Rahul said that batting in the middle order allows him the time to read the match situation and relax before he walks out to bat.

"One thing I really enjoy is that you don't have to rush back into batting," Rahul, who also kept wickets this series, told Star Sports. "You get time to put your feet up, have a nice cold shower, have a good meal and then relax and then see what's happening before walking in. That's the good thing about batting at No. 5.

"Batting at No. 5 has just helped me understand my game a little bit better. Given the ball is slightly older, you have to play spin straightaway and that's not what I am used to usually. Obviously Rohit [Sharma] is very clear that that's where he wants me to bat and he's conveyed that to me. So now I am challenging myself to get used to this position."

On Thursday, Rahul walked in when India were reduced to 62 for 3 in the 10th over while chasing 216. He then plugged one end up with risk-free batting and built useful partnerships with Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel to take India over the line. Rahul also credited India'a bowlers for bowling Sri Lanka out for 215 in under 40 overs, which didn't leave India with a challenging asking rate.

"The bowlers bowled really well, they kept the pressure on and when you have the team all out for 200-220, it becomes a bit easy to chase later on," Rahul said. "You know three-four runs an over is not that challenging but Sri Lanka put up a good fight. They started really well with the ball, they got the early breakthroughs and there was pressure on us, but we enjoyed ourselves in the middle. [I had] good partnership with Shreyas, Hardik and Axar."
